Highlights
- Wat Phra That Doi Suthep: 600-year-old golden temple with sacred relics
Full description
Perched at 1,676 meters on Doi Suthep Mountain, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is Chiang Mai's most sacred and famous temple, founded in 1383. According to legend, a white elephant carrying a holy relic climbed the mountain and died here – the temple was built on that sacred spot. The journey itself is an experience – climb the legendary 306-step staircase flanked by giant Nagas (mythical serpents) or take the tram for convenience. At the top, you'll be rewarded with a dazzling golden chedi (stupa) shining with gold plates, intricate murals depicting Buddha's life, and relics of Lord Buddha. The temple terrace offers the most breathtaking panoramic view of Chiang Mai city below, especially magical at sunset when monks perform evening chants. Surrounded by Doi Suthep-Pui National Park, the area is rich with jungle trails, waterfalls like Monthathan, and hill tribe villages. A spiritual, cultural and scenic highlight – no Chiang Mai tour is complete without Doi Suthep. Terra Trek includes guided transport, entry fees, and best-time visits to avoid crowds.
